Planning your Planograms
watch this quick clip to check out a high-tech planogram
Planograms have several objectives and benefits. Planograms are essentially a map that will help plan every single inch of the store. By planning out the whole store it increases the selling potential within a store. When you take the time to plan out where each garment will go it makes the store more appealing. All the colors and patterns can be organized super well and the overall store will flow and be very cohesive. It is good to take a look at the whole picture at once rather than physical trial and error. Also, planograms will help reduce out of stock items because you can specifically state the count of merchandise on each rack. There will be a much tighter control on inventory when you effectively use planograms. Planograms are a huge advantage to a store’s employees. They make it easier to restock the items when they run out and need to be replenished. A planogram is a great tool to communicate to the employees because it is very clear and explicit. The final benefit of using a planogram is that it maintains consistency for a brand. Each store in a chain will look the same, which helps shoppers navigate to find what they want.

Here a several tips to consider when designing your own planogram. Follow the “eye level is buy level” idea. New and trending products that are placed at eye level have a greater chance of being visible and therefore purchased. All products should be hung at least 18 inches from the floor and never placed directly on the floor. Items displayed vertically, in columns, on shelves it makes them more visible and profitable. Studies have shown that people tend to pick up and buy items that are on the right side because most people are right handed. Thus, the bigger or more expensive products should be placed on the right. This is known as the trade-up principle. Finally, companies with private label brands should try using the piggybacking technique. This is where popular name brand items are placed adjacent to the private label brand so they get noticed as much as the popular brands.

I highly encourage every store to use planograms. They are very beneficial because they save time, create organization, and ultimately increase store profitability. The tips I described above are very helpful to consider when designing your planograms. Use a planogram next time you want a perfectly planned floor plan.
